P & O has announced that despite a major effort to improve the financial viability of its 15-year-old Portsmouth – Bilbao service, continuing losses remain unsustainable. The Company says it will cease its Portsmouth – Bilbao ferry service with effect form the end of September 2010. withdraw from the Portsmouth - Bilbao route at the end of September 2010.

The route will operate normally up to and including 27 September 2010. P & O say they will contact anybody with bookings after that date in order to make alternative arrangements or offer refunds.

P & O have been operating the Portsmouth – Bilbao for fifteen years.

Chief Executive, Helen Deeble, said: “We have examined every option very carefully and have been trying for more than three years to find a suitable replacement ship in order to continue the service profitably. The Pride of Bilbao has served us well but is now an old ship nearing the end of her commercial life and needs to be replaced.

“However, we have reached the sad conclusion that such a replacement vessel is not currently available and as this loss-making route is unable to fund the cost of a new purpose-built ship we have no alternative other than to close it.”

Brittany Ferries, who have been operating the competing route to P & O (Plymouth – Santander), will now be offering service to Santander from Portsmouth, Poole and Plymouth. Our understanding is that these services will commence operating before closure of the P & O service. Nice to know that, despite P & O’s withdrawal from this “gateway to Spain”, there will now actually be a greater choice of routes + the benefit of French food on board!
